Opening Day

This post is coming late, as opening day was technically January 9th, but I wanted to talk about my first day on site and the first day of the Arizona legislature. I sat on the House floor for the whole event (if you were watching PBS that day you might have seen me- I know, I'm a celebrity).

But if you missed it, Opening Day began in the house with the official election of the Speaker of the House, J.D. Mesnard, and he took attendance of all the members. Here is his face if you don't know who he is:
Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives
Almost every one of the 60 members chose to rise under a point of personal privilege to introduce guests to the House, which means that they rose to introduce their family members or anyone else they brought to Opening Day. After a couple of hours, the governor came to give his State of the State address, which you can watch the speech here:

Afterward, there was a reception (catered by Macayos), where I got to take a photo with the governor! I originally approached him and took one photo, in which my eyes were closed (because I'm so smart), and so I had to approach him for a second time to ask for another photo.

Me with my eyes open
Me with my eyes closed (winner)
Overall, it was a very exciting experience and I am beyond thankful for having been able to been there. I will leave you with one last self-promotion, of a photo from the Arizona Republic where I am in the side wearing blue (again, celebrity).

  1. Great photo with the Duce and Where's Waldo at the end (found you!). Did any significant legislative discussion occur on the first day, or was it all ceremony? Can't wait to hear from our woman on the floor (that's you)!

    1. Thanks Trey! There wasn't any significant discussion on the first day, besides the State of the State address. But the ceremony was cool-Your woman on the the floor

  2. Hey Mimi! I can't wait to follow your senior research project in the following weeks and see where this leads you! How did you get this opportunity, and do you want to go into politics as your career?

    1. Hi Anuka! I emailed the Rep. Ugenti-Rita, and she was kind enough to take me under her wing (so to speak). I don't know if I want to do politics as my career, but I guess we'll see!

  6. Hi Mimi! Sounds like your senior research project is going to be very exciting and beneficial! Meeting the Governor is an awesome achievement. Did the Governor mention anything interesting? From what I can tell, your senior research project is among the boldest.

    1. Hi Kirill! The government basically outlined what he wanted to get passed this legislative session, most of which was about education. Feel free to watch the whole speech from my post if you want to hear more.
