Hi everyone! Today was another day in the Senate, because according to Rep. Ugenti-Rita's assistant, Mr. Klugman, there wasn't much going on in the House and he likes to go out of his way to make sure I am entertained (have I mentioned how grateful I am of this? not to say that the House can be boring, but you can imagine). So I started the day at the Senate Judiciary committee, which was a first, and was very interesting because I got to witness a confirmation hearing for a judge. Of course, he was accepted as a judge because he was very qualified and so on. But he told his life story, which was interesting to hear, so I encourage all of you to watch here (if the times are off, it is from 2:07 to 20:07):
After that, I went to the House floor, where they passed another ridiculous number of bills, but this time there was a little more debate here and there. After which, I met with the Rep. Ugenti-Rita and Mr. Klugman to discuss what I should do now that committees were pretty much done (with the exception of Appropriations, because it's kinda important to budget talks). The Rep. Ugenti-Rita then had the idea that I could interview the Speaker of the House and the House minority leader, which is being set up right now! Which she then came up with the quote of they day, to which I obviously responded with a yes. In fact, the whole Democratic Leadership has agreed to meet with me, and so I am currently getting my questions ready for my interview! So if you have any ideas or suggestions as to what I should ask, please comment below!! See you next week!

Hey Mimi! I understand what you're saying about your time at the House not being boring per se, but not exactly the most entertaining either; I suppose that's how work here at Churchill is, as well. I've got my shredder and my ever-growing spotify playlist to keep me company lol. It's great to hear that you will get to meet the whole Democratic Leadership! I'm sure that you will probably ask better questions than I could suggest, but with all of the controversy surrounding President Trump and his relationship with the media, I think it would be interesting to perhaps see what the Democratic Leadership's relationship (or, at least, what their perspective is) with the media. Can't wait to see what comes of this, and good luck!
ReplyDeleteI'd be interested to hear everyone's opinion on their coverage in the media (or lack thereof). It would be an interesting angle on your project to have personal testimony!
ReplyDeletehey mimi! Has this experience so far encourage or discouraged your from going into politics? Do you think that this will be a future possibility for you? Also, I am still amazed how you managed to get such a rare opportunity like this. It's so cool that they are so accommodative to students, especially if it will help move the younger generation into politics.
ReplyDeleteHi Mimi! It's so cool that you're getting to interview the Speaker of the House and the House minority leader! I can't wait to see your post about that experience. Maybe you could ask them what they feel is the most important part of their job or how they deicide which bills should and shouldn't be heard.
ReplyDeleteHey Mimi! It's nice that you were able to witness some debating on the house floor and then interview the Speaker of the House! Congratulations on being able to meet with the entire Democratic Leadership. How has your experience so far affected your view of our government?
ReplyDeleteHi mimi, Great work! What differences have you noticed between the house and senate? Are they substantial?
