"Mic Drop for Arizona"--2/8/17

Today as my second "official" day, I once again went to Senate Finance, which I will be doing every week from here on. The Senate Finance Committee heard a whopping 11 bills (which if you didn't notice by my use of the word "whopping", is a lot). The committee went on from 9-12:30, which is a 3.14 bill/hour rate, for those of you at home who also care about math too much. I haven't introduced the members of this committee yet, but it consists of Chairman Senator Farnsworth, Senator Fann, Senator Borrelli, Senator Bowie, Senator Cajero Bedford, Senator Farley, and Senator Petersen. Incidentally, Senator Farnsworth is one of two Farnsworths in the legislature, the other being in the House.

I then ate a quick lunch with Frida (whose project is next to mine, check out her cool blog here) and went to the House floor, where the House passed bills HB2025, HB2064, HB2114, HB2232, HB2262, and HB2268. It takes a while to pick up on how to read these fact sheets to understand them through their language, but not having sat in on committee hearings I can't tell you too much about the bills (sorry, I know how disappointed you must be).

After that, I went to Appropriations, where universities gave presentations on how they impact the state economy and what funding they need. After that, there were more presentations on budgeting within the department of education, when Senator Carter gave the quote of the day during this committee meeting, announcing Intel's commitment to invest $7 billion dollars within the state of Arizona. Even though legislators come from different backgrounds and different beliefs, their passion for the state of Arizona is something they all share in common, and it was nice to see both sides of the aisle come together to celebrate this good news.

  1. Hi Mimi! My mom actually works at Intel so #represent. I just wanted to know how much of a commonality it is for big corporations such as Intel or Microsoft to donate mass amounts of money like this?

    1. Hi Ameya- I had no idea that your mom works at Intel, that's so cool. I think that this donation was definitively a huge amount that we don't often receive, but many legislators have been discussing how more and more big corporations are choosing to move out of California and into Arizona, so maybe we will see more of this in the future!
